Humans in Extreme Environments

<p>Human resilience and capacity in extreme environments are crucial in rescue services, survival and crisis situations and adventure and sports activities. The course provides knowledge of physical capacity, risks and extreme environment management through risk assessment, prevention and protection.</p><p>The course addresses situations in which people are exposed to extreme and challenging conditions: in rescue services, during disaster incidents, during heat waves and cold periods, in tourism, in wilderness and crisis situations, and in connection with sports and extreme sports. To manage extreme environments safely, knowledge that is continuously updated and further developed is required. The course is therefore relevant for individuals with responsibilities in activities where such situations may occur: within rescue services, crisis management, work management, tourism and sports. The knowledge can also be used to design activities and to develop products and protective measures for safe and healthy functioning in extreme environments.</p><p>The physical factors of the environment, such as extreme climate, fire, air pressure, high altitude and cold water, may involve risks and affect human health, function, physical work capacity, comfort and well-being. The course provides an understanding of how these environments affect human physiology and performance, the risks associated with exposure to extreme environments, and human capacities and limitations to adapt to such conditions. You will gain knowledge of methods and strategies for risk assessment and management, including prevention and protection, as well as the selection of clothing and personal protective equipment.</p>
