Humans in Extreme Environments

<p>The course provides knowledge on the effects of environmental factors on human performance and health. The considered factors are mainly heat and cold, cold water and diving, conditions related to air pressure, low oxygen content, but also the methods and strategies for risk assessment and management. How do physical factors of the environment such as climate, fire, air pressure and cold water adversely affect human health, function, physical work capacity and well-being? People can be exposed to extreme conditions at work, in rescue services, in adventure tourism and extreme sporting events. Knowledge about the related risks is relatively well developed but accessibility to it is limited for many exposed groups. In order to safely deal with such situations, those responsible need to keep up to date on the most recent applications from research. This is obviously crucial for rescue service personnel, but for managers, sports leaders and others as well who can benefit from having knowledge of people’s needs, physiology and limitations when designing activities that take place under extreme environmental conditions.
