Intermediate Economics II including Degree Project (Bachelor)

The full semester course consists of three modules: Labour Economics Labour Economics is the study of the market for labour services. It studies how households (workers), firms (employers), and the government interact on the market for labour services and how this interaction determines wages and employment. The course addresses topics of labour supply and labour demand, theories and practice of wage determination as well as measurement and analyses of labour productivity, labour mobility, labor market discrimination, and the role of government and unions in labour markets. Economics of Migration This course examines the theoretical and empirical models developed to study the economic impact of immigration. During the course students will be introduced to economic models that explain why people migrate and who migrates, how immigration affects labour market outcomes of native-born workers, the labour market performance of immigrants in the host country, and mechanisms of ethnic segregation. The course will also examine theories and empirical models of ethnic discrimination and the extent to which the economic impact of immigration persists across generations. Finally, the course explores theoretical and empirical models of immigrant self-employment and immigrants’ utilization of welfare. Bachelor Essay The course involves writing and presenting, in writing and orally, a thesis addressing a research question in economics. During the course the student will learn how to motivate and answer a research question using a scientific approach. This involves giving an overview of relevant theories, discussing existing empirical research related to the research question and providing original empirical and/or theoretical research. The student is expected to defend the thesis at a seminar and to discuss the theses of other students.
