Master Programme in Applied English Linguistics

The programme has as its overarching goal to offer the student a specialisation in Applied Linguistics, which involves “the study of language and language-related problems in specific situations in which people use and learn languages” (mission statement of the journal Applied Linguistics), specifically in relation to the English language. The specific profile of the programme is in discourse analysis, second language acquisition, sociolinguistics, corpus linguistics and computer-mediated communication. The first term of the programme begins with the courses Core Areas in Applied English Linguistics and Themes in Applied English Linguistics, each of which is worth 7.5 credits. Following this, the courses Discourse Analysis worth 7.5 credits and Methods in Applied English Linguistics worth 7.5 credits are studied. The second term begins with the course Academic Writing and Speaking in English Linguistics, worth 7.5 credits, and ends with the course Degree Thesis in Applied English Linguistics, worth 15 credits. The programme also includes an optional course worth 7.5 credits which can be studied at an optional university and which should be relevant to the degree thesis and be selected in consultation with the programme co-ordinator.
