Master's Programme in Global Environmental History

Environmental history is an interdisciplinary subject exploring the complex relationship between humans and nature throughout history. The focus is on historical changes, events, debates and analytical perspectives on the relations between human societies and natural environments. By analysing these relationships, the Master's Programme in Global Environmental History also seeks to interpret, explain and debate contemporary issues of sustainability and resilience. The programme is given in cooperation between four departments and one centre at Uppsala University, as well as a department at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU). As a student, you are a part of the University's broad expertise in this field of research with teachers who specialise in aspects of African, European and Global environmental history. The programme provides an overview of the lengthy historical processes of interaction between human societies and natural conditions. You will gain a deeper insight into different aspects of how the relationship between humans and nature has changed as modern states and global power relations emerged. You will independently identify and analyse key issues and debates in global environmental history and relate these to topical issues. The programme concludes with the writing of a Master's thesis. The programme is preparatory for doctoral studies. Other career paths include landscape conservation and planning, environmental-cultural heritage management, and environmental consultancy or dissemination in these fields. The language of instruction is English.
