Master's Programme in Humanitarian Action and Conflict

What is humanitarian action? In what ways are humanitarian emergencies intensified and changed by conflict? What factors define a humanitarian disaster? What laws and moral principles steer humanitarian interventions? The Master’s Programme in Humanitarian Action and Conflict is aimed at those interested in humanitarian work in Europe and the world. Humanitarian work transcends boundaries, as is testified by the fact that the largest humanitarian organisations work in many different countries and that humanitarian professionals come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Both natural disasters and conflicts need technical experts from areas such as medicine, logistics, sanitation and psycho-social care. In addition, there is a need for project managers, administrators and policy developers to realise and shape the humanitarian response. When humanitarian professionals face severe challenges, such as the conflict in Syria, there is also a need for a multi-disciplinary approach to understand the causes of the suffering. There is otherwise a risk that the humanitarian response will be ineffective and futile. This Master's programme at Uppsala University is especially suited for those who want a better understanding of humanitarian work in conflict situations and are interested in working with the great humanitarian challenges of today. The language of instruction is English.
