Narration and Visual Storytelling

In this course you'll have the opportunity to be introduced to diverse forms of audiovisual narration and storytelling. We'll survey together the key concepts of narratology and then we'll examine the visual culture that is at the base of our society, and key analytical tools will be presented to make sense of the visual narratives that surround us. This also includes a discussion of the challenges posed by AI-generated images and Deepfakes, and of how ideologies and discriminatory representations (of gender and ethnicity, for example) are typically embedded into visual narratives. We'll also consider the basic tenets of how narration works in the fiction film, including a practical introduction to screenwriting.
