New Religious Movements

<p>New Religious Movements are often at the centre of debate and public attention. In this course, they are placed within a broader narrative of religious change.</p><p>The course provides you with knowledge about New Religious Movements and their place within the religious diversity of modern society. You will explore how these movements have emerged and developed from the nineteenth century to the present day, the questions and needs they address, and how they relate to the wider society around them. Examples of movements studied may include the Hare Krishna movement, the Church of Scientology, and Mormonism.</p><p>Throughout the course, you will develop an understanding of how New Religious Movements are shaped by social change and how they influence the ways people create meaning and a sense of belonging. You will also have the opportunity to examine how these movements have been perceived and received in different historical and cultural contexts.</p><p>The course therefore offers a deeper understanding of religion as a dynamic phenomenon that is continually changing and evolving in response to the world in which it exists.</p>
