Phonetics: Phonology

<p>How do speech sounds emerge and change over time? In this course, you will explore phonology and investigate sound patterns in the world's languages. You will work with both theories of sound systems and the collection and analysis of linguistic data.</p><h3>Explore the Sound Patterns of Language</h3><p>This course provides advanced knowledge of phonology, the study of how speech sounds are organized and interact in different languages. You will explore how sound patterns are structured, why they take the forms they do, and how they change over time.</p><p>A particular focus is placed on the role of the larynx in the development of speech sound patterns. You will also investigate why certain types of sound change recur across many of the world's languages.<br/></p><h3>Theory and Analysis</h3><p>During the course, you will compare different phonological theories and learn to evaluate their strengths and limitations. You will develop your ability to analyse linguistic data, identify patterns, and interpret how phonological processes operate.<br/></p><p>You will also strengthen your ability to formulate hypotheses about how sound patterns may have developed and changed throughout history.<br/></p>
