Poetry, Sustainability and Change

<p>The course highlights how the emotional and imaginative power of poetry can foster reflection, awareness, and motivation for change.</p><p>This course focuses on the intersection of poetry and sustainability and encourages you to use poetry to deepen your engagement with sustainability-related themes that are meaningful to you. The premise of the course is that poetry, through its distinctive use of language, emotion, and perspective, can open up new ways of understanding the world and our place within it. The course seeks to extend the potential of poetry beyond the literature classroom and invites you to decentralise human perspectives through the analysis of poetic texts.</p><p>You will receive a foundational introduction to the tools needed for poetry analysis and practise applying these tools to poems that engage with a range of sustainability themes. Key concepts from poetic analysis addressed in the course include imagery, diction, tone, form, and structure. You will also explore poetry’s affective dimensions by examining how poems engage emotions and how individual and collective emotional responses can reshape understandings of sustainability issues through an affective and reader-response lens.</p><p><br/></p>
