Prehospital care, practice II

Nursing (3 ECTS cr) and Medical Science (4.5 ECTS cr) are integrated in the course. The course is conducted as clinical placement (VFU) over a period of five weeks, comprising 32 hours per week, one week of which is completed in an anaesthesia setting. Mandatory attendance applies during the clinical placement, and the course is conducted on a full-time basis. During the clinical placement, ambulance and prehospital emergency care is studied through the integration and deepening of practical and theoretical knowledge. Various models, theories, and methods that underpin the professional practice of the ambulance nurse are applied. Throughout the course, students practise communication, patient transfer and mobilisation, handling of medical technical equipment, safety procedures, and advanced pediatric life support (A-PLS). The A-PLS training is conducted at a clinical training centre (KTC) and initiates the clinical placement course in accordance with the guidelines of the national resuscitation council. Furthermore, the course includes the study and application of structured patient assessment, care and treatment, prioritisation, and selection of level of care. Ethical principles, nursing documentation, and information delivery to the patient, next of kin, and healthcare team are also applied. In addition, medical leadership at the scene and triage are practised. During the clinical placement in the anaesthesia department, students practise techniques for airway management and for monitoring and evaluating the patient's respiratory status, as well as monitoring, evaluating, and reflecting on the effects of administered medications. Students are given the opportunity to develop a professional and clinically appropriate approach to patient care by demonstrating respect for the patient's dignity, integrity, and autonomy, and by exhibiting professional conduct characterised by insight, sound judgement, and competence.
