Programme in Pharmacy

The pharmacist is the expert in drugs at the local pharmacy, in the pharmaceutical industry, and in pharmaceutical research. The science of pharmacy covers everything from how medicines affect the body at the level of individual cells, the development of new medicines, and use of medicines by patients. The pharmacist is a vital link between doctors and chemists on one hand, and the general public on the other hand. Both dispensing pharmacists and pharmacists are educated in pharmaceutical sciences, but training as a pharmacist is longer. Five years of full-time study will lead to a degree in pharmacy. Practical laboratory work plays an important role in the study programme in pharmacy, while a great deal of the education takes place in the form of lectures and group projects. Students study chemistry, cell biology, pharmacology and pharmacy. The programme includes topics focused in the biomedical field such as the study of how the body functions, the study of disease, and pharmaceutical treatment of diseases. A large part of the course literature is in English. There are oral or written examinations after most of the individual courses. The training ends with one semester of work experience at a pharmacy. Completion of the programme entitles you to be awarded certification by Socialstyrelsen (The National Board of Health and Welfare). Completion of the study programme in pharmacy qualifies for entry to research education. Note that courses are given in Swedish.
