Översikt
The course studies the history of the Crusades from the conquest of Jerusalem in 1099 by the First Crusade until the 14th century. It will present 1) an overall view of the history of the crusades, and 2) the different discussions since c 1970 within international research about defining crusades; about the positions of the crusades in military and religious history in general; and about the relations between Christianity and Islam. In addition, the course will present the afterlife of the crusades, from medieval writing about them to contemporary, modern popular culture. The course consists of a mandatory part for all participants, and of specialized topics that participants can choose among.
