Social Anthropology: Engaging with Social Anthropological Theory

<p>Social anthropology is vital for understanding how different cultures perceive and engage with the world. This course gives you an in-depth exploration of theories challenging basic assumptions of our own thinking by contrasting them with other ways of perceiving reality.</p><p>In this course, you will explore contemporary anthropological theories that in one way or another challenge fundamental assumptions in modern Western thinking. Is “development” something self-evident or even positive? What do we really mean by “humanitarian”? </p><p>You will study: </p><ul><li>Major theoretical developments in recent decades, including their historical and social context </li><li>How leading theoretical frameworks are engaged within mainstream research </li><li>How to critically assess and apply theoretical perspectives </li><li>How to identify gaps in knowledge and areas for future research </li></ul><p>The course is part of the Master’s programme in Social Anthropology, but it can also be taken as a stand-alone course. </p>
