Social Psychology I

Students acquire instruments to understand humans as group and social beings. The course also lays the foundation for further studies in social psychology. Instruction is in the form of lectures, group assignments, and independent projects. The course consists of the following modules: Module 1: What is Social Psycology? 7.5 ECTS Credits The module introduces basic concepts and theories of social psychology with a focus on identity and socialisation. Module 2: Social Interaction and Strategies, 7.5 ECTS Credits The module covers theories of the ways in which people form perceptions in interaction with others. The module illustrates how individuals adopt and use different forms of expression, norms, values, and language in their daily interaction with, for instance, family, school, and workplace. Module 3: Investigating Social Interaction, 7.5 ECTS Credits The module introduces the theory of science, the steps in the research process and the methodological problems involved in social psychology investigations. Students work on problem formulation, data collection, selection principles, ethical considerations and the principles of processing qualitative and quantitative data. They also practice doing simple observations, interviews and questionnaires. Module 4: Social psychology specialisation The module treats human interaction and social psychology analysis by dealing with a limited problem in social psychology. Theoretical and empirically chosen sociological areas such as identity and emotions are also treated, along with issues of gender and organisation. Instruction is in the form of lectures, group work and projects.
