Sociology II

The course covers both classic and modern sociological theory. Students develop their knowledge of research methods and demonstrate their skills in an academic text. Instruction is in the form of lectures/lessons, seminars and practical exercises. Students carry out a project under supervision. The course consists of four modules. Module 1 Categorisation, normality and power, 7.5 credits The module centres on society and social processes, primarily from a gender, ethnicity and class perspective. The construction of categories, normality and deviation is treated along with the aspects of power embedded in such constructions. Module 2 Sociological theory and social change, 7.5 credits Students learn to describe classic and modern sociological theorists and the contexts of the intellectual traditions. Students also discuss the influence of the classic sociologists on modern theories and their contemporary relevance. Module 3 Collecting and processing information about society, 7.5 ECTS cr The students develop and deepen their knowledge of both quantitative and qualitative sociological research methods. Students design theoretically based instruments for data collection, such as interview guides, and work with coding, comparing, and categorising qualitative data. Collecting data with other methods such as questionnaires and bivariate and multivariate analysis of quantitative data is also treated. Module 4 Project, 7.5 credits The students carry out a small-scale sociological study and also critically peer review a fellow-students project in seminar.
