Somali Grammar 2 for Mother Tongue Speakers

You get the opportunity to develop an advanced understanding of Somali as a linguistic system, from a contrastive perspective. The focus is on morphology and syntax, but also word formation and phonetics are treated briefly. At the centre of the course is a medium-sized reference grammar in Somali where the language is described from a native language perspective. Short extracts from other descriptions are also read as a comparison when the descriptions differ clearly. In such cases, pros and cons of the different presentations are discussed. Through studies of the course literature in Somali, students' knowledge of basic linguistic terminology in Somali is strengthened, and through discussions of the material in Swedish or English, students' understanding of the relationship between the linguistic conceptual apparatuses of the different languages is also strengthened.
