Somali Lexicology, Lexicography and Semantics

In this course you get a general theoretical introduction to semantics, lexicology, terminology and lexicography from a Somali perspective. We thoroughly go through Somali word formation and you get an introduction to Somali lexical aids and research on Somali lexicology and lexicography. The theoretical knowledge is then applied to examples in Somali in the form of practical exercises, e.g. the use of terminology in authentic text material. The purpose of the exercises is to develop an understanding of what lexicology is and the ability to make independent and critical assessments and independently distinguish, formulate and solve problems, particularly with regard to Somali lexicography and corpus-based documentation of Somali terminology. In all course components, issues that concern the relationship between linguistics and standardisation, language preservation and language policy are discussed. The course has scheduled online classes.
