Sustainable energy supply

Any sustainable energy supply system will have to be based on the efficient use of a multitude of primary energy sources and on the distribution of several different energy carriers. Electricity, refined and sophisticated fuels, district heating and district cooling will all have roles to play, as will raw fuels like wood residues, municipal waste, firewood and intermediate quality fuels such as wood pellets. The production end of the system will have to be based on several technologies; Solar heating panels, solar photovoltaics, wind-power stations and hydropower stations. Wave- and tidal power will play a role – as will bio refineries, geothermal energy and heat pumps. This course aims at introducing briefly the different technologies available today for the production of different types of energy carriers. Also nuclear power is included in the course – though it is not long-term sustainable due to the limited fuel resources.
