Swedish Politics - Past and Present

<p>Are you curious about how Swedish politics has evolved - from key historical turning points to today’s political landscape? In this course, you will gain insight into how political institutions developed, how parties were formed, and which ideas have shaped Swedish democracy.</p><p>The course provides an overview of developments in Swedish history following the dissolution of the Kalmar Union in 1523 and the Reformation. However, the main focus is on the period from the early 19th century and onwards, when the current system of government was established and our institutions acquired their contemporary structure.</p><p> During the course, you will learn about the Swedish political system, the constitution, and the main political parties. You will explore how Sweden has positioned itself as a small country in a global context - as a member of the EU, the UN and NATO - and analyse key concepts such as “the Swedish Model” and the policy of neutrality. You will discuss what it meant that Sweden historically remained outside all military alliances. You will also analyse the gender equality model, refugee policy and issues of ethnic diversity, as well as how these have developed over time.</p>
