Visual Culture: Environment and Nature

<p>In this course, you explore how nature, the environment, animals and the climate are represented in visual arts and media. You examine how images shape our understanding and experience of the natural world from historical, philosophical, aesthetic and ecological perspectives.</p><p>In this course, you explore how the environment, nature, animals and the climate are represented and understood in visual arts and media. The course examines how these representations shape our experience of and ideas about the natural world, while considering their historical, social and cultural contexts.</p><p>The course is structured around three themes: animal and human, environment and nature, and anthropocentrism and biocentrism. Key topics include landscape and environmental aesthetics, ecological perspectives in art and visual culture, and the ways different media shape representations of nature and the environment. The course approaches these topics from historical, philosophical, aesthetic and interdisciplinary perspectives, while also considering how representations of the environment relate to knowledge, science and power.</p>
