Optimization, a subfield of operations research, deals with mathematical models and algorithms for solving practical problems in the areas of computer science, economics, engineering, physics, chemistry, biology etc. The course gives a broad orientation of the field of optimization, with emphasis on basic theory and methods for continuous linear and nonlinear as well as discrete linear optimization problems. Two examples of optimization problems which we all meet in our everyday life, and which are easy to model and solve after completing the course are: "Which path should we take from town A to town B, if we want the driving distance to be as short as possible" and "With the requirement that the driving time must not be longer than X minutes, how fast should we drive on each part to obtain the lowest possible fuel consumption." Exercises and laboratory problems are solved in MATLAB and optimization modelling languages using state-of-the-art software.
At least totally 60 credits in the technical, natural sciences, business administration or economics areas including Basic Calculus Continuation Course, 7.5 credits, of which 2.5 credits must be completed at the beginning of the course, Numerical Methods, 7.5 credits, of which 3 credits must be completed at the beginning of the course, Basic Calculus, 7.5 credits, and Basic Vector Algebra, 7.5 credits, or equivalent.
Each offering has its own dates and conditions. Closed offerings are retained as history and do not mean that a new application is open.
