Overview
Optimization, a subfield of operations research, deals with mathematical models and algorithms for solving practical problems in the areas of computer science, economics, engineering, physics, chemistry, biology etc. The course gives a broad orientation of the field of optimization, with emphasis on basic theory and methods for continuous linear and nonlinear as well as discrete linear optimization problems. Two examples of optimization problems which we all meet in our everyday life, and which are easy to model and solve after completing the course are: "Which path should we take from town A to town B, if we want the driving distance to be as short as possible" and "With the requirement that the driving time must not be longer than X minutes, how fast should we drive on each part to obtain the lowest possible fuel consumption." Exercises and laboratory problems are solved in MATLAB and optimization modelling languages using state-of-the-art software.
