GIS in Ecology is a course for those who want to combine technology with natural science. Through digital tools and map-based analysis, you will receive a practical introduction to how geographic information systems (GIS) are used in ecology and nature conservation. The course gives you insight into how different types of spatial data – such as satellite images, species observations, and environmental measurements – can be used to answer key ecological questions.

During the course, you will become familiar with both the theory behind cartography and the technical aspects of GIS, including how raster and vector data are managed and analysed. Using GIS software, you will learn to retrieve data from databases, analyse spatial patterns, visualise results, and effectively communicate ecological information. Applications include identifying habitats for threatened species, assessing landscape connectivity, and mapping ecological risk areas.

The course concludes with an independent project where you choose an ecological research question to investigate using GIS – an opportunity to deepen your skills and practice working independently with ecological analysis. Throughout the course, there is a clear connection to professional practice, with exercises and projects that reflect the kinds of tasks conservationists, environmental analysts, and spatial planners face in the real world.

To be admitted to the course, students must have completed at least 15 credits in Bioscience, including the course BV121G Ecology, nutrient cycling and Landscape Processes G1N (or the equivalent).
Each offering has its own dates and conditions. Closed offerings are retained as history and do not mean that a new application is open.
