Kursen behandlar beroendeframkallande substanser och beteenden (t.ex. alkohol, narkotika, tobak, spel, sex, shopping och mat) ur ett folkhälsovetenskapligt perspektiv. Kursens teman skildrar vad som vid olika tillfällen och kontexter betraktas som problematiskt, vilken typ av åtgärder som vidtas för att hantera problemen och vad det får för betydelse för användarna och samhället. Följande teman behandlas i kursen: * Användning av och potentiella problem med olika substanser och beteenden * Kategorisering och diagnostisering, inklusive medikalisering * Gamla och nya förklaringsmodeller samt aktuella utvecklingstendenser * Folkhälsopolitikens (ANTDS) utveckling och drivkrafter * Marginalisering och social exkludering * Normalisering och problematisering via livsstil/kultur/genus
