Kursen behandlar antropologins idéhistoria samt vad ämnets historia kan bidra med för förståelsen av samtiden. Vad kan till exempel social- och kulturantropologins historiska verk lära oss om vår samtid? Utifrån ett idéhistoriskt perspektiv, där teorier och metoder ses som uttryck för tidsandan, undersöks styrkor och svagheter med olika antropologiska inriktningar samt relationen mellan teori, etnografi och det antropologiska fältarbetet. En fråga som behandlas är hur äldre teorier skiljer sig från de teoretiska perspektiv som används idag.
