Overview
This course concerns the application of digital signal processing techniques, with particular focus on methods that enhance the characteristics and information of signals that are recorded in different settings. The course covers topics as sampling and reconstruction of a digital signal, transform methods, Windowing methods, filtering, noise reduction, spectral analysis and system identification. Additionally, the course also covers applications of Wavelets. The course is given as a series of independent projects. The projects include one- and two-dimensional signal processing and analysis of physiological signals. At least one of the projects is based on data from current research projects within the field of biomedical engineering. Engineers are frequently discovering new ways to process digitals signals using a variety of mathematical formulae and algorithms. Biomedical signal processing involves the application of these methods for analysis of e.g. heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation levels, blood glucose, nerve conduction, brain activity, to provide useful information upon which clinicians can gain insights into the physiological process and aid in clinical assessments.
