Asian Studies: Contemporary Chinese Society

<p>Explore the rapid transformation of one of the world’s oldest civilisations. This course guides you through contemporary China, examining grassroots activism, digital innovation, global influence, and the everyday lives of people in a society undergoing significant change. </p><p>The course examines the major social, political, cultural, and economic changes shaping China today. You will explore how traditional Chinese values intersect with urbanisation, digital developments, and China's global role. Other key topics include revolutionary history, political ideology, governance, environmental policies, migration, media influence, civil society, and law. </p><p>Special emphasis is placed on gender, diversity, and everyday life. You will explore how women, youth, ethnic minorities, and different social groups experience modern China. At the end of the course, you will have a deep understanding of contemporary Chinese society. Through discussions, films, and diverse readings, you will gain critical tools to analyse China’s ongoing changes. </p><p> </p>
