Bachelor's Programme in English Studies

<p>There is a great demand for people with a strong knowledge of English. English is important for working life, and it has a powerful presence in media and in public spaces. The bachelor’s program in English Studies at Lund University prepares you to meet these economic and social demands with robust English competence.</p><p><strong>What does the program include?</strong></p> <p>The program consists of six terms (three years) of study. It comprises 180 credits and leads to the Bachelor of Arts in English Studies. You study English for at least four out of six terms.  First, you study three terms of English in Lund. Then, you choose one or more elective courses to study in Lund during terms 4 and 5. One of these terms can also be spent in an English-speaking country. The program concludes with a thesis in English with a specialization in literature or linguistics. You may also choose to specialize in both English literature <em>and</em> linguistics.</p> <p>In the Lund bachelor’s program in English, you will study with instructors who are also active researchers.  Accordingly, the program has a strong research foundation. </p> <p>These courses are required:</p> <ul> <li>English Grammar, Vocabulary, Phonology, and Pronunciation</li> <li>English Literature</li> <li>Introduction to History and Culture</li> <li>Academic Writing in English</li> <li>Linguistic Analysis</li> <li>Literary Analysis</li> <li>English in Multicultural Society</li> <li>English Film and Image</li> <li>Elective courses inspired by the research specializations of instructors</li> <li>Research Methods in Linguistics and/or Literature</li> <li>Linguistic and/or Literary Theory</li> <li>Bachelor’s Thesis</li> </ul> <p> </p> <p><strong>What can you choose to study in the program?</strong></p> <p>Beginning with term four, you make personal choices.  You may choose to write bachelor’s theses in both of the subject’s streams (i.e., English literature or linguistics).  One of the theses then becomes your degree project and you write it in term six (the final term).</p> <p>If you seek to study in an English-speaking country, there are excellent possibilities through Lund University’s many exchange partnerships. If you do not study abroad, you instead take another subject for one to two terms.  The other subject can be another language or a subject such as history, film studies, philosophy, law, economics, comparative literature, political science or media and communication studies. </p> <p> </p> <p><strong>What skills will you learn by doing the bachelor’s degree in English Studies? </strong></p> <p>After completing your degree, you will be able to do the following and more:</p> <ul> <li>Communicate in written and spoken English with great accuracy</li> <li>Seek out and understand information about the English language and English literature from sources of different types such as dictionaries, grammar books, non-fiction texts, and digital resources</li> <li>Analyze the English language and English literature from a research-based perspective</li> <li>Discuss your analyses with respect to previous research and theory in order to draw conclusions</li> <li>Collaborate with colleagues and review their texts and presentations as well as assimilate feedback from colleagues about your own work</li> <li>Work independently and solve problems to meet deadlines with self-discipline</li> </ul> <p> </p> <p><strong>What can you do with a degree in English Studies?</strong></p> <p>Some students enter directly into the workforce with positions such as information officers, administrators, public relations specialists or writers, and content developers in the gaming industry, among other possibilities.  Knowledge of English is needed in most professions.  As such, excellent knowledge of English will give you advantages on the job market.</p> <p>Many who earn the bachelor’s degree in English go on to further studies that lead to professional qualifications as a teacher, translator or librarian.  Such programs are available at Lund University as well as other higher education institutions.</p>
