Overview
Bilingualism/multilingualism is not just a growing research field, but also the lived reality of many speakers in an age of globalisation, mobility and the increasing importance of English as a world language. While bilingual/multilingual speakers clearly enjoy advantages in many contexts, bilingualism/multilingualism also leads to challenges for parents, families, policy makers and schools. In this course, we look at the linguistic, cognitive, educational, and affective-social aspects of bilingualism/multilingualism. We further examine societal perceptions of bilingualism/multilingualism and implications for speakers' identity and wellbeing.
