Overview
The purpose of this course is to introduce how electromechanical systems manufactured using micro- and nanotechnology, so-called MEMS systems, can be used for biological studies (bio-MEMS). The course also includes microfluidic systems, especially organs-on-chip. The course also aims to give you an insight into how a research group collaborates and conducts research in the field. The historical development of the research fields of bio-MEMS and organs-on-chip. Basic theory in microfluidics, e.g., laminar flows, hydraulic resistance, and capillary effects, including relevant equations. Material properties and functions, especially regarding PDMS and hydrogels. An overview of manufacturing techniques at the micrometre scale, e.g., cleanroom techniques, rapid prototyping, and bioprinting. Setups required to operate and collect data from microfluidic system chips. The course also covers and discusses how bio-MEMS systems can be used for various biological applications, such as the analysis and sorting of single cells, biosensors, and the cultivation of cells on chips (organs-on-chip).
