Kursen omfattar delkurs ett: Evolutionsbiologi med didaktisk inriktning, samt delkurs två: Systematisk zoologi och botanik, floristik och faunistik. I delkurs ett behandlas grundläggande evolutionsbiologisk teori. I delkurs två behandlas teoribildning samt grunderna inom systematik, samt taxonomi, nomenklatur och fylogeni med tonvikt på växter lavar och landlevande djurgrupper. Även bestämningsmetodik inom floristik och faunistik behandlas med avseende på arter som förekommer i Sverige. Didaktiska aspekter på undervisning i relation till det ämnesmässiga innehållet behandlas också eftersom kursen även ges som en del av ämneslärarutbildningen med inriktning mot biologi.
