Do you want to learn more about how plants and animals work, for example what drives evolution and how species have adapted to different environments? Do you also want a good foundation for working with the major global challenges such as climate change, conservation of natural resources and the ability to provide a growing population with sustainable and nutritious food? Then you should study the master's program in biology. During the education, you can choose between courses that are closely linked to our profile areas in research such as ecophysiology, evolutionary ecology, biodiversity and nature conservation biology, with a focus on life both in water and on land. Areas of employment Biologists work in many different areas with diverse tasks depending on the profile of their biology education. Examples of employers outside the academy where former Biology students from the University of Gothenburg work are: county administrative boards, local councils, Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management, Swedish Board of Agriculture, Science parks like Universeum as well as Astra Zeneca and other pharmaceutical and biotech companies. Content The master's program in biology builds on the bachelor's program and gives you the opportunity to both deepen and broaden your knowledge in the field of biology. The program is open to you regardless of whether you have studied your undergraduate degree in biology at the University of Gothenburg or at any other Swedish or foreign university. We offer five different main specializations, based on the degree courses Evolutionary Ecology & Behavioral Biology, Physiology & Cell Biology, Conservation Biology, Biodiversity & Systematics and Marine Ecology. During the first year, you study optional courses of 60 credits, primarily at the advanced level, to focus on your individual degree project during the second year. You can choose to put together your education on your own or follow one of our recommended tracks until the degree project in each direction.
