Overview

BIOS08 This course gives a theoretical introduction to microscopy with an emphasis on fluorescence microscopy

There is a dramatic development of research methods to visualize biological structures and physiological events. This development runs in parallel with the explosive development in molecular biology and protein biology (genomics and proteomics) - it is important to be able to study where, and under which conditions, the identified genes are expressed and where proteins are localized in cells and organisms. The course focuses on microscopy-based methods used in contemporary research, with emphasis on methods in which fluorescent markers are used to visualize structures and events. The course gives a theoretical background to the most common microscopy methods, different types of biomarkers, and optimization of microscopy samples. The course also contains demonstrations of advanced research microscopes, and a project study where the students prepare and analyze microscopy samples with fluorescent marker(s). The course is suitable for those who consider a career in biomedical sciences in an academic environment or in the industry.
