Behörig till Vidareutbildning av lärare (VAL) är den som saknar en examen som kan vara behörighetsgivande enligt 2 kap. 16 § skollagen (2010:800) för legitimation som lärare om han eller hon, 1. på grund av tidigare högskoleutbildning, tidigare motsvarande utbildning eller arbetslivserfarenhet som lärare eller i undervisningen i förskolan eller förskoleklassen har förutsättningar att uppnå en behörighetsgivande examen för legitimation som lärare eller förskollärare inom ramen för en utbildning om maximalt 120 högskolepoäng och 2. är verksam som lärare i skolväsendet eller medverkar i undervisningen i förskolan eller förskoleklassen med en förskollärares arbetsuppgifter om minst 50 procent och i huvudsak i rätt ämne eller ämnen, i rätt skolform och på rätt nivå. Med ämne menas skolämne, förskolepedagogiskt ämnesområde eller fritidspedagogiskt ämnesområde.Om det behövs för att kunna bedöma om de förutsättningar som anges ovan är uppfyllda får högskolan i ett enskilt fall besluta att sökanden ska utföra kompletterande prov eller andra uppgifter.
