Creative Writing in English: Creating Story Worlds

One of the most exciting things that literature can do is allow us to imagine worlds beyond the ones that we inhabit. Readers can be transported to ancient empires, distant galaxies or the hidden backstreets of a metropolis. This course offers a practical view into crafting engaging and vivid story worlds. Examples of memorable fictional worlds are discussed and a range of writing exercises in world creation carried out. Students will develop a story world through constructing and editing an extended piece of writing. Writing sample Please note that in order to be eligible for the course, you will need to both apply via Antagning.se (or Universityadmissions.se) and send in a sample of your writing. The selection of applicants for this course will be based on the quality of the submitted writing samples. The sample piece should be narrative fiction describing a story world, written in English, and no longer than 10 pages. Format: Times New Roman 12, 1.5 line spacing, Word or PDF. Note that excerpts from longer texts as well as text still in progress are accepted as writing samples. Send the text as an attached file to english.subject@lnu.se. Deadline is 17 May 2026.
