This course introduces you to demographic transitions and how fertility, mortality, and family structures have shaped societies over time.</p><p>Demographic Transitions gives you a deeper understanding of how population patterns evolve and interact with economic and social change. You’ll study long-term trends in fertility, mortality, and family structures across different regions and historical periods.</p><p>The course introduces key demographic concepts and methods, including life tables, age-specific birth rates, and the Lexis diagram. You’ll learn how to calculate and interpret demographic measures, and how to use them to describe and analyse population change.</p><p>You’ll also explore major theories of demographic change and critically assess their relevance in different historical contexts. The course encourages you to think about how demographic shifts relate to broader societal transformations - from industrialisation to globalisation.</p><p>Whether you’re interested in history, economics, or social development, this course equips you with tools to understand how populations shape - and are shaped by - the world around them.<br/></p>
