Kursen behandlar relevanta utvecklingsteoretiska perspektiv på emotionell och social utveckling. I kursen behandlas hjärnans utveckling i ett evolutionärt perspektiv samt kunskaper och forskning om hur människans förmåga att reglera affekter utvecklas. Teoretiska utgångspunkter av betydelse för utveckling fördjupas inom områdena anknytningsteori, affektteori, mentaliseringsteori och neuropsykologi i kursen.
