<p>Explore the forces shaping economic growth beyond the West. This course offers you a critical and comparative perspective on how emerging economies have developed - and why some have succeeded while others have stalled.</p><p>In recent decades, global economic growth has shifted toward countries outside the traditional Western sphere. This course invites you to examine the development paths of emerging economies in regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and Pacific Asia. You will gain a deeper understanding of why some nations have managed to catch up economically while others remain stagnant.</p><p>Through historical and theoretical perspectives, you’ll explore key topics like industrial policy, technology transfer, market integration and poverty reduction. The course also introduces you to the challenges and opportunities these countries face, and the quality and availability of data used to study them.</p><p>Whether you’re interested in global development, economic history or international policy, this course equips you with the tools to critically assess growth patterns and structural change in the Global South.<br/></p>

At least 60 credit points in either economic history, economics, history, economic and social geography, sociology or the equivalent knowledge. (Students accepted for the following master’s programmes are qualified for this course: EAETU Economic Growth, Population, and Development, EAEUT Economic Growth and Development, EAISD Innovation and Spatial Dynamics, and EAGCH International Economics with a Focus on China)
