Overview

Discover how China and India are reshaping the global economy. This course gives you the tools to understand their transformation - from colonial legacies to modern powerhouses - and why it matters for the world today.

In The Rising Giants, you explore the long-term economic development of China and India, two of the world’s most influential emerging economies. You follow their journey from imperial and colonial pasts to modern industrial societies, and examine how institutional change, inequality and social transformation have shaped their paths.

The course takes a comparative and structural approach. You study China’s shift from a planned to a market economy, and India’s post-independence development. You reflect on how poverty, class and gender influence economic change - and how the poor can act as agents of transformation. Environmental challenges are also part of the discussion.

This course is for you if you want to understand the deeper forces behind Asia’s rise. It suits students interested in economic history, development or global affairs. You don’t need prior university studies - just curiosity and a willingness to think critically.
