<p>Do you want to understand how the labour market works? In this course, you will gain an understanding of how wage levels are determined, why unemployment arises and how extensive it becomes, and what mechanisms and decisions influence jobs, wages and the conditions of the workforce.</p><p>In this course, you will receive a broad introduction to the labour market and which factors influence people’s decisions to work, firms’ willingness to hire and how wages are determined. You will learn to analyse how the supply of and demand for labour relate to issues such as employment, unemployment and wage development.</p><p>The course examines how education and investment in human capital affect wages and career opportunities and why wage differences may arise between different groups. We also discuss how discrimination can influence individuals’ opportunities in the labour market, as well as how labour market policies - such as minimum wages and taxes - affect the functioning of the labour market. You will also gain insights into labour mobility, how people move between regions and countries and how opportunities in working life can be passed down across generations. We discuss what drives these movements and what consequences they have for individuals and society.</p><p>By combining fundamental theoretical reasoning with empirical examples, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of how labour markets operate in practice and what factors shape the behaviour of individuals and firms. The course is well suited to those who want to build a solid foundation in economics and acquire tools to analyse current societal issues related to work, wages, and condition.</p>
