Overview
The course *English for Teachers in Grades 1–3* (15 hp) aims for participants to, from both a subject-didactic and subject-theoretical perspective, develop subject knowledge and professional competence for teaching English in compulsory school, grades 1–3. The course consists of two modules, each worth 7.5 hp, and runs over two semesters (part-time, quarter speed). The course includes recorded lectures with instructors from Högskolan Väst and seminars with presentations and discussions that provide opportunities for collegial learning. The preparatory readings are based on the course goals and are connected to the course literature and current steering documents. Participants use and process the content through a variety of oral and written assessment tasks. The course has a clear focus on language teaching and learning for pupils in grades 1–3, as well as on the teacher’s own competence. Course 1 begins with an introduction to theories and research on how children and young learners acquire languages, forming a foundation for further work with different kinds of texts and materials focusing on multimodal (spoken and written) resources for the classroom, as well as on the teacher’s choice and organization of learning activities. To create a stimulating and safe learning environment, the teacher needs to feel confident as a language user and language model. Therefore, the development of the teacher’s own linguistic competence and language skills is emphasised throughout the course. In addition to knowledge of the English subject, the course also provides an understanding of how the overall goals and guidelines of the national curriculum can shape teaching through conscious choices of inclusive texts, materials, and the teacher’s professional approach.
