English: To Write and Read Short Stories

<p>ENGC16 offers an introduction to the fundamentals of short story writing through reading, analysis, and your own creative work. By engaging with contemporary short stories and practical writing exercises, you will develop your understanding of narrative technique.</p><p>This course introduces key narrative concepts and techniques used in contemporary short fiction. You will read and discuss modern short stories with a focus on the narrative choices that shape them, such as plot, characterisation, point of view, description, and pacing. Through close reading and shared discussion, you build both a theoretical and practical understanding of how short stories work.</p><p>Alongside the analytical work, you will engage in creative writing. Guided by the course content, you will experiment with different narrative techniques and gradually develop a longer piece of fiction. No prior experience of creative writing is required—the course is designed to be accessible to beginners as well as to students with a strong interest in literature and storytelling.</p>
