Ensemble IV, Western classical music

Students study and perform Western classical music repertoires for various ensemble constellations in different styles and from various epochs as well as repertoire that is based on cross-generic musical forms. They discuss and solve technical and rendition problems relating to style, performance praxis, notation issues, and interpretation in various areas of music and ensemble constellations. They also critically reflect upon and discuss different artistic approaches, renditions, and performances as well as methods for developing their own musical performance. Students whose main instrument is the piano also practise accompaniment. Parts of the repertoire are performed in in-house concerts. Instruction is in the form of group lessons and concentrated rehearsals during project weeks. Students may be offered an internship for a short, fixed period. If this is the case, the course coordinator has the overall responsibility for coordinating the internship, which is voluntary for the student. The available internship placements, the main instruments involved, the duration, and the timing within the semester vary. The internship is part of the overall planning for ensemble distribution among the students. Programme students are informed about terms and arrangement as early as possible.
