Overview
The course is an introduction to some of the central themes and problems within international film music research. Current concepts and analytical perspectives within the field are discussed in relation to the course literature and we also discuss how they can be applied to different types of music in film as well as to films from different countries and time periods. Specific questions that are discussed are: - How does music contribute to creating meaning and significance in film? - What is the relationship between music and other sounds and between music and film images? - How does music relate to the fictional worlds movies are about? - How does music affect the viewer's experience of film? - To what extent is film music ideologically charged? - How can one analyze and interpret the function, meaning and place of music in film?
