Overview
The course deals with the microbially-mediated carbon cycle, with special focus on microbe-mineral interaction. It looks at the impact of microorganisms on the aquatic and terrestrial geochemistry. It covers basics in microbiology and microbial metabolisms, lithosphere and hydrosphere as microbial habitat, microbial biomineralization and weathering, industrial and environmental application of geomicrobiology (e.g., biomining, bioremediation, water treatment), origin of life.

Entry requirements
Access to the course requires knowledge equivalent to a natural science or technical bachelor's degree, which includes at least 60 ECTS credits in geology or geoscience, marine geoscience, or environmental science. In addition, 15 ECTS credits of geochemistry or 15 ECTS credits of chemistry are required. Swedish Upper Secondary School course English 6 or equivalent.
