GIS: Geographical Information System for the Social Sciences

<p>Explore the application of GIS - Geographic Information Systems - to study various social phenomena, by introducing modern mapping tools for analysing spatial patterns, managing complex data, and interpreting social and geographic issues. </p><p>This course offers a broad introduction to GIS as a tool in the social sciences, covering both research and practical applications. You will learn key concepts that guide the use of these methods and engage with central debates and developments related to social issues, including practical approaches that influence how they are applied across different fields. </p><p>Through lectures and readings, you gain an understanding of the principles behind spatial data, analytical functions and geographic information management. The course centres around several practical exercises that introduces you to a range of GIS applications used in both academic and professional contexts, helping you see how spatial analysis can support scientific inquiry and evidence-based decision-making. </p><p>The course is taught in the second term of the Master's Programme in Human Geography and is also offered as a freestanding course. </p><p>All teaching is conducted in English and takes place at the Department of Human Geography, in the charming city of Lund. </p>
