Overview
International migration is a central aspect of globalization in the contemporary world and it is recasting states and societies in a range of distinctive and important ways. The nature, extent and different dimensions of international population movements and their consequences in an increasingly multicultural world are discussed in the course. The efforts to control and regulate immigration fostered by labour market demands, flights from unsafe regions and dreams of a better life, are analyzed, as well as questions about how the exclusion/inclusion of “aliens” are connected to citizenship and other rights. Central phenomena to be studied are citizenship, multiculturalism, incorporation and gender and ethnic relations.
