Overview
This course offers a perspective on the history and evolution of print media in the Anglophone world. In the course, you will study the effects of print media on social developments such as the spread of literacy and how such developments in turn affected the media and their language. The course will also investigate the relationship between print media and politics. You will learn about the ownership, publishing and circulation of printed matter and the gatekeeping functions of publishers and media. Furthermore, the course will deal with phenomena such as printed texts as physical objects, intellectual property, and the effects of globalisation on print media. You get an opportunity to specialise in one subfield of the study of Anglophone print media during part of the course.
