Overview
How does film, television, and visual media form the way we see ourselves and the world around us? This advanced-level course offers in-depth knowledge of the role moving images play in the lives of children and young people. You will explore the historical development from optical toys and matinée culture to television shows, children’s cinema, and young people’s own creative practices with media. Through theoretical concepts such as mediatization, moral panic, media literacy, and audiovisual Bildung, you will develop tools to analyse screen media from a child and youth perspective. Drawing on current media research, we will discuss the tensions between the needs of young people and adult’s norms. By analyzing children’s films, teen series, and digital formats, you will deepen your understanding of how childhood and adolescence are transformed in a digital media society. This course is designed for students with an academic background in education, film studies, cultural studies, or media and communication, but also for students with a general interest in children and visual media.
